9700 AL TERNA TOR BELT REPLACEMENT

DESCRIPTION

On vehicles affected by this recall, the heavy duty alternator belt (with aramid cord reinforcement) may continue to turn the alternator pulley after an alternator bearing failure. If the pulley continues to turn, it could lead to front bearing overheat.

Therefore, the heavy duty aramid belt must be replaced by a polyester belt as needed following the interchange table provided.

Before reinstalling the polyester belt, the alternators front bearing must be inspected for damage and the alternator(s) replaced as needed.

Please take note that only the vehicles equipped with a Remy 55S 250 amp alternators are affected by this bulletin.

Chronology :

-2022-03-15 Prevost initiate an internal inquiry to analyse root cause of thermal event related to alternator front bearing. A link between the introduction of new belts and an increase of thermal events related to alternator’ front bearing failure was identified. This new case would be presented to Volvo Product Safety Committee (PSC)

-2022-03-30 Case presented to PSC. PSC decided there is a safety related defect and a recall is required. As some Volvo 9700 vehicles use the same type of belt, it was decided to include this vehicles on the recall

-2022-03-31 Preliminary discussion with NHTSA to expose the findings

-2022-04-06 Prevost submitted the vehicle defect report to NHTSA

1 Associated Investigation

Alternator Front Bearing Failure
NHTSA ID: PE21011
Dated opened: May 13, 2021

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is opening a Preliminary Evaluation after receiving a tip from a fleet safety manager concerning alternator front bearing failures that cause elevated temperatures within the engine compartment, resulting in the fire suppression system (FSS) activating, immediately shutting the engine down, and rendering the bus inoperable.

Review of Early Warning Reporting Data identified 9 field reports for Model Year (MY)2015 through MY2019 H3 and X3 Prevost buses, describing alternator failures in any of 3 alternators equipped on the bus. In some cases, a minor fire occurred damaging nearby electrical harnesses.

An immediate shut down of the bus can increase the risk of a crash or injury of passengers when transferring to another bus.

ODI is opening this investigation to evaluate the cause, consequence, scope and frequency of the alleged defect in the subject Prevost buses.
