Delay Returning to Engine Idle/FMVSS 124
An engine that does not return to idle quickly enough can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo Trucks
) is recalling certain 2023-2024 VN vehicles. The engine may not return to idle within 2 seconds if the accelerator pedal position sensor becomes disconnected. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 124, “Accelerator Control Systems.”
Remedy
The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 21, 2024. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo Trucks
number for this recall is RVXX2313.

Description of Defect:
The engine may not return to idle within the time period required by FMVSS 124 (2 seconds) if the accelerator pedal position sensor becomes disconnected. An engine that doesnโt return to idle could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash.
There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue.
The remedy for this recall is currently under development.

Dealerโs Responsibility:
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.
Release Schedule:
- Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal November 27, 2023.
- Owner notification letters will be released on or before December 15, 2023.
- Repair Instruction will be released once they are available.

Noncompliance :
In the event that the accelerator position sensor ground wire becomes
disconnected, the default operating voltage range on the engine rationality
check timing for return to idle is non- compliant with FMVSS 124 S5.2 and S5.3.
FMVSS 1 : 124 – Accelerator control systems
FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : If the accelerator position sensor ground wire were to become disconnected,
the engine would operate out of compliant return to idle time target, where
there could be loss of control of the vehicle which could result in a risk of
crash. There have been no warranty claims, field or service reports reported
for this issue.
Description of the Cause : When Pin B is open circuit, the pedal defaults to a high state of 3.8V. This is
within the operating voltage of the engine and is read as 100% driver demand.
On the previously introduced pedal, the OC voltage was 5V. This is outside of
the operating range and is read as an error.
Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur :
The driver may experience an increased delayed return to engine idle.

Recall Alerts
Description of Defect: The engine may not return to idle within the time period required by FMVSS 124 (2 seconds) if the accelerator pedal position sensor becomes disconnected. An engine that doesnโt return to idle could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue. The remedy for this recall is currently under development. Models/ Model Years Affected: Certain 2023 and 2024 VN model vehicles manufactured from October 24, 2022 through November 20, 2023. Vehicle Quantities: 1064 vehicles (1009 US, 55 Canada) Dealerโs Responsibility:
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.
Release Schedule:

โขOwner notification letters will be released on or before December 15, 2023.
โขRepair Instruction will be released once they are available.
