Remedy
Dealers will reprogram the electronic control module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 01, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks

has determined Certain 2022 VNL model vehicles manufactured with a Cummins
ISL engine and Eaton Endurant transmission, may shift to neutral without the driver selecting neutral. An unexpected shift to neutral may result in driver distraction, which may result in a vehicle crash.
Volvo Trucks
has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this safety defect. Therefore, Volvo
considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo
’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To correct the defect and ensure safe operation of these vehicles, the Vehicle Electronic Control Unit must be programed to latest software.

Repair Instructions
1. Secure Vehicle for service.
2. Connect to the vehicle using latest version of Using Premium Tech Tool (PTT).
3. After identification is complete, navigate to the programing tab within PTT.
4. Select operation 1700-08-03-39, Program Electronic Control Unit.
5. Select the Vehicle Electronic Control Unit option (MID 144) and reprogram the control unit.
6. After programing is complete, clear any faults left by the programming process.
7. Return vehicle to service.

power and Eaton transmission may shift to neutral without the driver selecting neutral. The risk to operational safety is driver distraction. This issue only affects Volvo
product.
The vehicles will be repaired with a software fix.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

September 30, 2021 PSC meets and determines that a safety-related defect exists.
October 6, 2021 Volvo
notifies NHTSA that a safety-related defect has been determined and that a voluntary safety recall will be performed to address the affected vehicles.

Recall Alerts Description of Defect: Volvo has determined that on certain trucks with Cummins power and Eaton transmission may shift to neutral without the driver selecting neutral. The risk to operational safety is driver distraction. This issue only affects Volvo product. The vehicles will be repaired with a software fix. Models/ Model Years Affected: Certain 2022 Volvo VNL model vehicles manufactured from January 4, 2021 through October 4, 2021. Vehicle Quantities: Volvo 162 (all US) Dealer’s Responsibility: The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.
