Fire Risk from Leaking Coolant Hose
If the coolant leak goes unnoticed, coolant may accumulate in the catalytic converter heat shield insulation and catch fire when the vehicle is stationary, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary
Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo Cars) is recalling certain 2016 XC90 vehicles. Exposure to heat and humidity may cause the engine coolant bleeder hose to crack, resulting in a coolant leak.
Remedy
Volvo Cars will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine side coolant bleeder hose, free of charge. The recall began June 12, 2019. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo’s number for this recall is R29936.

A. RECALL R29936 DESCRIPTION
Volvo Car USA LLC and Volvo Car Canada LTD (Volvo) on behalf of Volvo Car Group has decided to launch Recall R29936 on model year 2016 XC90 vehicles.
Volvo has identified that the coolant bleeder hose (engine side) may degrade over time and crack due to heat and humidity load. This condition can create a coolant leak, and also pose a risk of coolant leaking on the catalytic converter. If the coolant leak goes unnoticed, coolant may accumulate in the catalytic converter heatshield insulation and, in a worst case scenario, over time this might result in a fire in the engine compartment area when the vehicle is stationary.
The corrective action is to replace the engine side coolant bleeder hose.
A total of 34,006 U.S. and 2,721 Canadian vehicles are eligible for this recall.
Produced in the USA and available as an electronic document. Hard copy documents are printed in USA on recycled paper containing a minimum of 50% wastepaper and 10% post-consumer waste.

Vehicle eligibility must be confirmed:
- Vehicle Inquiry – Vehicle Warranty where the message “Recall R29936 Coolant Bleeder Hose” will appear for eligible vehicles or check eligibility in TIE.
All vehicles should be checked for any incomplete recalls or service campaigns or service upgrades. All open Recall, Service Campaign or Service Action repairs should be completed. If you have any questions concerning this recall send them to recall@volvocars.com.

The owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed in June.
E. VEHICLES IN RETAILER INVENTORY
It is a violation of federal law for a retailer to deliver any new Volvo that is eligible for a recall.
Retailers are advised to check all vehicles in inventory for recall eligibility and repair immediately. Violation of this requirement by a retailer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle. Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory before delivery.
F. RETAILER RESPONSIBILITY
All vehicles qualifying for this recall must be repaired prior to a customer taking possession of the vehicle.

Volvo Car USA LLC (Volvo) on behalf of Volvo Car Group, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2016 XC90 vehicles.
The reason for Recall R29936:
Volvo has identified that the coolant bleeder hose may degrade over time and crack due to heat and humidity load. This condition can create a coolant leak, and also pose a risk of coolant leaking on the catalytic converter. If the coolant leak goes unnoticed, coolant may accumulate in the catalytic converter heatshield insulation and this might result in a fire in the engine compartment area when the vehicle is stopped or parked.
The corrective action is to replace the engine coolant bleeder hose with an improved part.
What you need to do:
Please contact your authorized Volvo retailer for an appointment. The repair procedure will be performed at no cost and can take up to 4 hours to complete. However, the time your Volvo retailer requires to service your vehicle may be slightly longer depending on the vehicle.
If you had previously paid for this repair to be performed, prior to receiving this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.
