Recall Alerts Description of Defect: The electronic stability control may be inoperative due to the lack of yaw input as a result of a software programming error. In the event of the need for stability control intervention, the vehicle may not have the ability to mitigate a loss of stability which may increase the risk of a crash. There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue. The remedy will be to program the ABS/ESP ECU with software which restores the functionality of the yaw sensor to the stability control program. Models/ Model Years Affected: Certain 2024 VNL and VNR vehicles manufactured from September 05, 2023 through September 12, 2023. Vehicle Quantities: 30 vehicles (27 US, 3 Canada) Dealer’s Responsibility: The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer. Release Schedule: •Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal October 19, 2023. •Owner notification letters will be released on or before December 03, 2023. •Repair Instruction will be released once they are available. October 9, 2023 The Product Safety Committee meets and decides that a product safety defect exists. SAFETY RECALL Volvo Trucks North America Greensboro, NC USA Date Number Release Page 11. 2023 RVXX2310 01 1(3) Stability Control Programming RECALL INFORMATION (November 2023) Volvo Trucks has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2024 VNL and VNR model vehicles manufactured from September 5th, 2023, through September 12th, 2023. The electronic stability control may be inoperative due to the lack of yaw sensor input as a result of a software programming error. In the event for stability control intervention, the vehicle may not have the ability to mitigate a loss of stability which may increase the risk of a crash. Volvo Trucks has not received any field reports, warranty claims, or customer complaints associated with this safety issue; therefore, Volvo considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect. To ensure that these vehicles meet Volvo’s rigorous quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to program the ABS/ESP ECU with software which restores the functionality of the yaw sensor to stability control program. VEHICLES AFFECTED Certain 2024 VNL and VNR vehicles manufactured between September 5th, 2023, and September 12th, 2023. VEHICLE QUANTITY There are 30 vehicles affected by this recall (27 U.S., 3 Canada). Page 2 of 3 Parts N/A Repair Instructions 1. Secure Vehicle for Service. 2. Install wheel chocks. 3. Connect to the vehicle using Premium Tech Tool (PTT). 4. Using PTT run Operation 5931-07-03-20 under the Calibrate tab. This operation will program an updated PAR file into ABS module. 5. Remove wheel chocks. 6. Release vehicle from service. Important Note If you are experiencing issues running operation 5931-07-03-20 reference CBR- 2042 on how to set up Vendor Configuration Programing (VCP). SAFETY DEFECT: On a small number of trucks, a software problem could cause the electronic stability control (ESC) system not to work. SAFETY RISK: An electronic stability control system that doesn’t work could increase the risk of a crash. PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE: TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR: There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle repaired by a Volvo Parts and Service Center. The Volvo dealer will reprogram the electronic control unit. Recall repairs will be performed at no cost to you. The time required to repair your vehicle is approximately 0.5 hour.
