Description of Defect:

On certain VNRE model vehicles the rivnut inserts on the batteries may have been over tightened and could fail. The nut inserts can then become debris in the battery which could result in a short inside the battery pack. The over tightening of the busbar rivnuts could result in nut inserts shearing off and shorting inside the battery which could result in a battery fire.

There have been no warranty claims, field reports, accidents or injuries reported with this issue.

The repair will be the replacement of the batteries.

Models/ Model Years Affected:

Certain 2020 to 2024 VolvoeBay logo VNR Electric model vehicles manufactured from April 01, 2019 through February 10, 2023.

Dealer’s Responsibility:

Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

Note to Field
Latest Akasol Battery Recall
Version 3– 7/25/23

TO: VTNA Field Personnel

This is to inform you that we will soon be communicating to our dealers and customers a new proactive safety recall related to Akasol Gen 3 batteries. The recall affects 173 vehicles built between April 1, 2019 and February 10, 2023.
In this case, insufficient controls in Akasol’s manufacturing process led to potential over-torquing of rivnut inserts on the bus bars connecting battery cells. If the rivnut inserts fail, they can become debris in the battery, which could result in a short inside the battery pack. The batteries on these vehicles will be replaced with batteries produced after correction of the torque issue.

The issue was discovered in a battery being shipped to our manufacturing operations. There have been no reports of this issue occurring in the field.

Vehicles currently in corporate or dealer inventory will not be shipped until the batteries are replaced, which we are working to accomplish as soon as possible. An owner notification to customers currently operating affected vehicles will be sent by September 15, 2023. The vehicle battery thermal management system will provide a warning to the driver of a battery overheating situation.

All affected vehicles will be included in this new recall and receive replacement batteries, regardless of whether they completed the previous Akasol recall.

Safety is a core value for Volvo TruckseBay logo, and is essential to our continued leadership in the emobility transition. I thank you in advance for your support to our dealers and customers as we work through these issues, with strong focus on proactively ensuring the safety and performance of our industry-leading electric fleet.
