) is recalling certain 2023-2024 VN, VHD, and VAH trucks. The steering gear fasteners may not be properly tightened.
Remedy
Dealers will tighten the steering gear fasteners, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 18, 2023. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks

Description of Defect:
The steering gear fasteners may not be torqued to specification. Under-torqued fasteners can result in loss of clamp load, which may affect the steering and potentially cause loss of vehicle control and a crash.
There have been no reports of accidents or loss of vehicle control associated with this condition.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

Volvo Trucks
has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain VAH, VHD, VN, and VNE model vehicles manufactured from May 17th, 2022, through May 26th, 2023.
The steering gear mounting fasteners to the frame rail may not be torqued to specification. The under-torqued fasteners could result in a loss of clamp load on the steering gearbox. Indication of this occurrence may include steering wander or a feeling of looseness in the steering.
Volvo Trucks
has not received any reports of personal injury or vehicle crashes because of this safety issue; therefore, Volvo
considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo
’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Volvo
’s rigorous quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to ensure the steering gear fasteners are tightened to specification.

Repair Instructions
1. Secure vehicle for service by parking on a flat and level surface.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in neutral or park.
4. Install the wheel chocks.
5. Unlatch and raise the hood.
6. Locate the steering gearbox mounting fasteners – driver’s side frame rail.
7. Set torque wrench to 275 ± 15 Nm. Check relaxed torque in tightening direction.
Relaxed Tightening Torque
275 ± 15 Nm
a. If found loose, check both bolt and nut for damage.
I. If damage is found on hardware, replace both bolt and nut.
II. If no damage is found on hardware, replace nut only.
b. Tighten to install torque and angle of 200 ± 10 Nm + angle 145°±10°.

June 19, 2023 Product Safety Working Group reviews product safety investigation results and recommends that this be brought to Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect.

VN, VHD and VAH model vehicles manufactured from May 17, 2022 through May 26, 2023. SAFETY DEFECT: On certain vehicles, the steering gear fasteners may not be tightened to specification. SAFETY RISK: Under-tightened fasteners can result in loss of clamp load, which may affect the steering and increase the risk of a crash. PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE: TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR: There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle repaired by a Volvo
Parts and Service Center. Dealers will tighten the steering gear fasteners to specification. Recall repairs will be performed at no cost to you. The time required to repair your vehicle is approximately 1 hour. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: You should contact the nearest Volvo
