Summary
Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo Trucks) is recalling certain 2024 VNL, VHD, and VNR trucks. The fastener that connects two steering components, the pitman arm and draglink, may be loose, which can cause the connection to fail and result in a loss of steering control.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and tighten the castle nuts and install new cotter pins, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 4, 2023. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks’ customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo Trucks’ number for this recall is RVXX2311.

Description of Defect:
Insufficient torque on the castellated nut on the pitman arm to the drag link.
If the pitman arm to drag link connection should fail in operation, there could be a loss of control of the vehicle which could result in a crash.
There have been no field reports, warranty claims or customer complaints associated with this issue.
The remedy will be to inspect the castle nuts, re-torque and install new cotter pins.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

RECALL INFORMATION
(October 2023)
Volvo Trucks has determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain VNL, VNR, and VHD model vehicles manufactured from July 21st, 2023, through September 9th, 2023.
The castellated nut on the pitman arm to draglink may have insufficient torque. If the pitman arm to drag link connection should fail in operation, there could be a loss of vehicle control which could result in a crash.
Volvo Trucks has not received any field reports, warranty claims, or customer complaints associated with this safety issue; therefore, Volvo considers this a proactive measure to protect the public and Volvo’s customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Volvo’s rigorous quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to inspect the castle nut, re-torque, and install new cotter pins.

Repair Instructions
1. Secure vehicle for service by parking on a flat and level surface.
2. Apply parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in neutral or park.
4. Install the wheel chocks.
5. Disconnect the battery from the negative terminal.
6. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels point straight ahead.
7. Locate the castle nut on the link rod connected to the pitman arm.
8. Inspect drag link end for excessive play.
a. If movement is found, replace components as needed.
b. If no movement is found, continue to step 9.
9. Remove cotter pin.
10. Set torque wrench to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). Check torque in tightening direction.
11. Torque tighten the nut to specified torque.
a. Tighten the nut to the next split pin hole.

12. Install the new cotter pin.
13. Connect the cable to the negative terminal.
14. Remove the wheel chocks.
15. Return vehicle to service.

October 2, 2023 Findings from the investigation are reviewed by the Product Safety Evaluation Committee and the recommendation is that this is be brought to Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect.
October 9, 2023 The Product Safety Committee meets and decides that a product safety defect exists.
October 14, 2023 573 Report filed with NHTSA
There have been no accidents or injuries related to this issue, there have been no warranty claims, field reports or customer complaints associated with this issue.
