Recall R89708 – Front Passenger Seatbelt Buckle – 2016-2017 Volvo

SUMMARY:

Volvo Car USA LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 XC90, S90, XC60, V60 Cross Country, V60, S60 Cross Country, S60, and S60 Inscription vehicles manufactured February 16, 2015, to August 22, 2016.

On the affected vehicles, the front passenger seat belt buckle attaching stud may loosen, allowing the buckle to separate from the seat belt bracket.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 210, “Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages” and number 209, “Seat Belt Assemblies.”

 

CONSEQUENCE:

If the seat belt buckle separates from the bracket, the front seat passenger may not be adequately restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash.

 

REMEDY:

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front passenger seat belt buckle stud, replacing the seat belt buckle as needed, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin December 12, 2016.

DESCRIPTION:

Volvo Car USA LLC and Volvo Car Canada LTD (Volvo) on behalf of Volvo Car Group has decided to launch Recall R89708 on certain model year 2016 – 2017 XC90, S90, XC60, V60CC, V60, S60, S60CC, S60 Inscription vehicles.

 

The affected vehicles may have not had the front passenger seatbelt buckle stud punched correctly. This may result in a separation between the buckle and the seat belt bracket. If this were to occur, it could increase the risk of injury to a front passenger seat occupant in a vehicle crash.

 

SERVICE:

Authorized Volvo retailers will inspect the front passenger seatbelt buckle stud by pushing/rotating the passenger seatbelt buckle forward, and checking if the seatbelt buckle stud is punched according to the illustrations in the attached instruction titled “TJ Instruction_32058_Seat Belt Inspection.pdf”

If the inspection procedure indicates an incorrectly manufactured seatbelt buckle, Volvo retailers must replace the seatbelt buckle.

If the inspection procedure indicates an incorrectly manufactured seatbelt buckle, Volvo retailers will replace the seatbelt buckle.

 

A total of 74,027 U.S. and 5,084 Canadian vehicles are eligible for this recall.

 

B. VEHICLES INVOLVED

NOTE:  RETAILER MUST CONFIRM VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY PRIOR TO  BEGINNING THE REPAIR FOR THIS RECALL.       

 

Vehicle eligibility must be confirmed:

  • Vehicle Inquiry – Vehicle Warranty where the message “Recall R89708 Front Passenger Seatbelt Buckle” will appear for eligible vehicles.

All vehicles should be checked for any incomplete recalls or service campaigns or service upgrades. All open Recall, Service Campaign or Service Action repairs should be completed.

 

C. PARTS INFORMATION / PARTS RETURN

PORT VEHICLES

No vehicles will be released from the ports without having this recall repair completed.  Vehicles completed at ports will have a “Green” dot on the inside of the fuel filler door identifying the completion of this recall. Please see the image below.

PARTS RETURN

Replaced seatbelt buckles will be required to be returned to the Technical Material Analysis (TMA) department.

 

D. OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owner notification letters will be mailed in December.Owners of eligible retailed vehicles that are requesting this recall to be performed should be accommodated.

 

E. VEHICLES in RETAILER INVENTORY

It is a violation of federal law for a retailer to deliver any new Volvo that is eligible for a recall.

Retailers are advised to check all vehicle inventory for recall eligibility and repair immediately. Once the repair is complete, the vehicle may be sold or leased.

 

F. RETAILER RESPONSIBILITY

All vehicles qualifying for this recall must be repaired prior to a customer taking possession of the vehicle.

 

G. CAMPAIGN REIMBURSEMENT PROCEDURES

Recall R89708 claims should be submitted using the LONG FORM application only.

 

H. TECHNICIAN COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT

The technician competency requirement for this campaign repair is: Level 2 – Certified Tech.
