RE:  Delayed quench issue

I would greatly appreciate your support in engaging Volvo Truck personnel to assist us with the following safety issue associated with three Howmet Wheel Systems’ wheels that we believe you have received.

Howmet Aerospace Inc.’s Howmet Wheel Systems business unit (HWS) is committed to the quality and safety of our products and we are deeply concerned with locating and recalling these three effected wheels as quickly as possible.

Background

HWS identified a thermal processing deviation with 11 wheels manufactured and heat treated in our Cleveland forge plant in late November 2020.  HWS believes 3 of these wheels may have shipped to Volvo Truck.  HWS has notified NHTSA of this safety issue.

Next Steps

Based on our initial request, we understand you have conducted an inventory inspection for the affected wheels.  We appreciate your attention and efforts.  If there is a possibility that trucks left your inventory during this search, we request your assistance with identifying the parties that took control of or purchased the trucks.  With your permission, we would like to reach out to these parties and ask for their cooperation in identifying the applicable wheels.

In the event that you believe there may be more opportunity to search Volvo’s existing inventory of HWS wheels for the applicable wheels, please see the enclosed attachment for information on identifying the applicable wheels.

Knowing that you share our concern and commitment to safety, we appreciate your cooperation and support as we work to identify and contain the wheels.

Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Ryan Cummins

SENSITIVE

Identifying Applicable Wheels

The applicable wheel is a ULT397 wheel with Heat #H6HW67 that was roll stamped either 12/5/20 or 12/10/20.

Image 1 uses a red arrow to identify the Heat # and where to find it on a bar code label on the drop side of a wheel.

Image 2 shows a sample roll stamp and where to locate the date on the roll stamp. NOTE: image 2 shows the date of December eleven, but that is an example image. The wheel of concern is stamped either 12/5/20 or 12/10/20.

Roll Stamp Sample Photo. Note: We are looking for the roll stamp date of either 12/5/20 or 12/10/20. The sample photo has a date of 12/11/20.
